The E257系 5500番台 is a surge train that was modified in 2021 from the E257-500 series, a limited express train for the Boso area. The front shape is similar to the 2500 series, but the interior has only been modified to a minimum, such as the installation of a luggage space. The design is a white body with green stripes, giving it a different impression from the 2500 series.
After being introduced as a surge train, it replaced the operation of the Takasaki Line system limited express trains that had previously been operated by the 651 series since the timetable revision in March 2023, and is now used on regular trains such as “Kusatsu/Shima/Akagi”.
